The thought that came to me today is that what we hear is colored by our context - where we are with our beliefs. So, this woman was not destroyed by Jesus' apparently cold-hearted direction for her to get in line. She could see and feel Jesus' love and compassion and that was stronger than the words themselves. She could believe that, even if she was like a dog, from Jesus there was ENOUGH to reach to her too. That encourages me - even though I know I fail in so many ways - there is ENOUGH for me and for everyone else.
The lesson that I found today was that Jesus actually listens to us. He gave the Greek woman an answer that she just couldn't handle and she tried one more time. She was polite and he listened and changed his mind. Jesus does listen and considers our needs. When my prayers are not answered the way I want them to be, I've learned that Jesus does listen. Again and again and again.
I love the concept of having Jesus in a room with me - he is listening to my questions and concerns about what he said and did in this instance. Lord, why would you say something that so obviously puts one group of people over the rest? Weren't you sent for us all? You must have been so tired of having people want something from you all the time - yet still you talked with her and had compassion instead of taking offense. Thank you my Lord and Savior.
