Wednesday, February 24, 2010 Jesus Threw Them Out

Text: Matthew 21:12-17 Reading 213

Just taking a quick look at this devotion, I think, "And I bet the merchants thought they were providing a necessary service!" It makes me think how easy it is to get far away from "what is needful".

  1. I think the important thing here is to see Jesus' eyes full of compassion for the sick and lame people. For me, it harks back to the softheartedness of yesterday. And then it makes me think about our "temple" and how we are doing things there - but, more importantly, I think about my "life temple" and what is happening there. It is shocking to think of Jesus being so violent and to know it was good to do it.

  2. This reading is interesting right after the one we read yesterday. I'm thinking Jesus was hard hearted with the loan sharks and the guys selling the pigeons. And at the end he says he left the Temple and went somewhere else. The notes in yesterday's devotion comment on how we divorce ourselves from situations, leaving a churhc, a task, a project,, etc. Do you think Jesus was divorcing himslef from what was going on at the Temple>

  3. What I want to think is that He left but not necessarily forever. Maybe He needed to be somewhere else for a while.

  4. I think you are right, Arlene. He surely didn't leave forever.

  5. Would any other action with the merchants have been effective? Would anyone have budged if he simply talked or even just shouted? Sometimes we have to do drastic things to get our point across. (Remember disciplining your children?)I think he really knew his audience and did what had to be done. I'm not happy with the "fed up" translation. Am I naive thinking that Jesus still loved the sinners and took the most vivid way to get his point across. How does Jesus speak to me? To you? Sometimes I need to have my tables overturned.
